Before Retirement Home in Parksville, Train For 8 Weeks
Still in the game! PQB Athletic is an annual strength event for Parksville and Qualicum Beach seniors over 80. Registration is open for 2026, with Sept 29 the deadline to register. Click to learn more.
What problem would a retirement residence solve?
When an older parent begins struggling at home, families often assume the next step must be home care or a retirement residence. Sometimes it is. But when the main problem is declining strength, balance or confidence, there may be another step worth trying first.
PQB Athletic offers adults over 80 an eight-week opportunity to discover what they can still improve before making a permanent decision about where and how they live.
Start by identifying the actual reason a move is being considered.
If your parent requires medical care, can’t manage medications safely, has significant cognitive impairment or needs continuous supervision, getting stronger won’t remove the need for care.
But if the concern is that your parent struggles to stand, climb stairs, walk confidently, carry groceries or recover from a stumble, physical capacity may be part of the problem.
That is where properly programmed strength training can be useful.
What could your parent do if they were stronger?
Strength can affect several parts of daily life.
Stronger legs make it easier to rise from a chair, use the toilet, climb entrance steps and get out of a car.
Better trunk and upper-body strength help with carrying laundry, opening doors and managing household objects.
Improved balance and stepping ability make walking through the home feel less uncertain.
Strength can change how much effort ordinary tasks require. Standing, walking, carrying and recovering independently may require less physical assistance than someone who cannot.
What PQB Athletic can reveal
Families frequently know that a parent is slowing down, but not what that means practically.
During the eight-week event, training can reveal:
Which movements are difficult because of strength, balance, mobility or confidence
Whether your parent responds to controlled, progressive resistance
Which everyday abilities improve and which concerns still require additional support
This structured look at what your parent can currently do, followed by 16 private training sessions designed to improve those abilities will progress into athletic potential, if it’s available medically to do so.
Strength can still improve after 80!
Without a structured attempt, families may make decisions based on a parent’s current condition as though it cannot change. PQB Athletic creates a defined period in which to train and observe.
Each participant receives 16 private 30-minute sessions in their Parksville or Qualicum Beach home. Training happens twice weekly and uses controlled movements, stable positions and resistance selected for the individual. The work can include standing, stepping, carrying, balance, joint support and getting down to the floor and back up. As the participant adapts, the program progresses.
At the end of the event, the family will see if standing, stairs and walking is steadier. This information can save you a ton of money! Maybe ongoing personal training after PQB Athletic should continue alongside some home support, even though training and care do different jobs.
Treating physical decline as irreversible without first testing trainable physical capacity is like taking a pill for something weight related, before changing your diet or exercising.

Registration closes September 29 at midnight or when all available places are filled.
Try the reversible option before making the permanent decision
PQB Athletic is an eight-week training event is a limited, practical experiment. Moving homes is a much larger decision.
For families exploring alternatives to retirement homes in Parksville, PQB Athletic offers a way to act now without pretending to know the final answer.
Your parent trains privately at home with Catt Smiley, a Certified Master Trainer, Strength and Conditioning Coach and Senior Fitness Specialist with more than 15 years of professional experience. The event provides age-appropriate athletic conditioning, proper programming, individual progression and the motivation of a shared annual challenge.
The objective is simple: find out what your parent can regain, what remains difficult and what support is actually necessary. Before assuming they need everything done for them, give them the opportunity to become stronger.
